Cloudflare DNS Faster More Private

Cloudflare has announced their first consumer product.
Cloadflare Consumer DNS.
Cloudflare DNS Faster More Private is how Cloudflare is differentiating it’s consumer DNS service from the others like Cisco’s Open DNS and Google’s public DNS services.
According to the announcement on the 1.1.1.1 website

Who is behind 1.1.1.1

1.1.1.1 is a partnership between Cloudflare and APNIC.
APNIC is a Regional Internet Registery (RIR) responsible for handing out IPs in the Asia Pacific region. It is one of five RIRs that manage IP allocation globally, the other four being: ARIN (North America), RIPE (Europe/Middle East), AFRINIC (Africa), and LATNIC (South America).

The announcement also states in regard to privacy that

Cloudflare will never log your IP address (the way other companies identify you). And we’re not just saying that. We’ve retained KPMG to audit our systems annually to ensure that we’re doing what we say.

Frankly, we don’t want to know what you do on the Internet—it’s none of our business—and we’ve taken the technical steps to ensure we can’t.

Cloudflare’s 1.1.1.1 DNS services claims response time of 14.8ms
as compared to Cisco’s Open DNS response time 20.6ms and
Google’s Public DNS response time of 34.7ms

Configure Window 10 to use Cloudflare’s 1.1.1.1 Consumer DNS

Click on the Start menu, then click on Control Panel.
Click on Network and Internet.
Click on Change Adapter Settings.
Right click on the Wi-Fi network you are connected to, then click Properties.
Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (or Version 6 if desired).
Click Properties.
Write down any existing DNS server entries for future reference.
Click Use The Following DNS Server Addresses.
Replace those addresses with the 1.1.1.1 DNS addresses:
For IPv4: 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1
For IPv6: 2606:4700:4700::1111 and 2606:4700:4700::1001
Click OK, then Close.
Restart your browser.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:block; text-align:center;" data-ad-layout="in-article" data-ad-format="fluid" data-ad-client="ca-pub-8661101530186734" data-ad-slot="4508509003"></ins>

The Cloudflare DNS Servers IP Addresses

For IPv4
Primary DNS Server IP Address = 1.1.1.1
Secondary DNS Server IP Address = 1.0.0.1
For IPv6
Primary DNS Server IP Address = 2606:4700:4700::1111
Secondary DNS Server IP Address = 2606:4700:4700::1001

Most router have a global configuration option so you can configure your network to use the Cloudflare DNS service so anyone connecting to your network whether by Wi-Fi or Ethernet will be using the faster more secure Cloudflare DNS.

Creators Update Windows 10 Install Process

Creators Update. Windows 10 began the Creators update Windows 10 install process. Microsoft initiated the update process upon reaching my desktop after I started the computer. The computer in this case is my desktop computer.
The specs of the computer are as follows.
Intel Core i5
12 GB 1600mhz DDR3
80GB Intel X25-M 2nd gen SSD boot drive (hey is was fast back in the day)
Windows 10 Home 64bit
It has been my work horse for close to seven years. When I built the computer I installed Window 7 64bit and upgraded to Windows 10 Home 64bit during the last month of the initial Microsoft WIndows 10 free upgrade offer period.
The featured image at the top of this article is the screen that takes over your desktop to begin the Creators Update Windows 10 Install Process.

Starting the Creators Update process

To begin the update you start by reviewing your privacy settings.
After you click or tap on the Review Settings button you are asked to review your current WIndows 10 privacy settings. After you are satisfied with your settings click Accept.
On the next page you get this information “There’s spme prep that needs to be dome before the update will be installed. We’ll be working behind the scenes for awhile, and you can continue to work uninterrupted. You’ll be able to schedule the installation for a time that works for you – it won’t start right now.
Rest assured that you’ll be notified before the update begins, so you can save your files and data.
Click OK.

I was left to wonder when and what would happen next.
The following day I opened Settings | Update & security and there was a notice that the Creators Update was ready to be installed. I click Install now and started the installation.
Below is our video of the Creators Update Windows 10 Install Process to show what exactly is invloved.

Video Creators Update Windows 10 Install Process.

Update time took approximatly 35 minutes from start to finish.
So far I have not had any issues with the computer after updating to the Windows 10 Creators Update.
That’s it with this article on the Creators Update Windows 10 Install Process.
Hope you found it useful.

xampp Apache install Windows 10 port 80

In this article I will show xampp Apache install Windows 10 port 80.
There seems to be a problem or conflict with both xampp and Windows 10 system service World Wide Web Publishing Service or IIS services. Both of these want to run on port 80 by default. Windows 10 World Wide Web Publishing Service loads on startup and this stops xampp from running on port 80.
Now you can reconfigure xampp’s Apache to use a different port but that solution can also cause problems down the road.
Here is a way to temporarly turn of the Windows 10 World Wide Web Publishing Service that runs on port 80 and keeps Xampp’s Apache from running on port 80.
This change of settings will only work until the next reboot of the Windows 10 computer.
On reboot the Windows 10 World Wide Web Publishing Service will start running again and block xampp from running on port 80.
You must also be logged into Windows with Administrator privileges to stop the Windows 10 World Wide Web Publishing Service.

Video xampp Apache install Windows 10 port 80

To stop the Windows 10 World Wide Web Publishing Service

World Wide Web Publishing Service

Start by logging into Windows with an Administrator account.

Then right click on the Windows start button and select Computer Management.

Then click on the < sign next to Services and Applications.

Then click Services.

Scroll down to the bottom of the page and look for (World Wide Web Publishing Service).

Right click on World Wide Web Publishing Service and select Stop.

Close Computer Management screen.

Launch xampp.

xampp’s Apache should now run using port 80.

Now that you have xampp’s Apache running on port 80 you are ready to locally develop WordPress as an example.
Remeber that after a computer reboot you will have to make this setting change again to have xampp Apache use port 80.

If you would like more information on xampp here is the Wikipedia entry.
xampp Wikipedia is a free and open source cross-platform web server solution stack package developed by Apache Friends,[2] consisting mainly of the Apache HTTP Server, MariaDB database, and interpreters for scripts written in the PHP and Perl programming languages.[3][4] XAMPP stands for Cross-Platform (X), Apache (A), MariaDB (M), PHP (P) and Perl (P). It is a simple, lightweight Apache distribution that makes it extremely easy for developers to create a local web server for testing and deployment purposes.

WordPress customize wp-admin login page logo using functions php

When developing a WordPress website or blog a nice touch is to customize the wp-admin login page logo. You can replace the default WordPress logo with one of your own using the functions.php file. This article will show you how to do that.

Here is what you will need to accomplish this bit of branding.
WordPress customize wp-admin login page logo using functions php.

You will need FTP access to the WordPress site.
I use FileZilla FTP client.

Next you will need the logo you want to use to replace the default WordPress wp-admin login page logo.

I also recommend using a Child Theme for your WordPress.
Using a Child Theme allows you to make customization and not loose them after updating WordPress.
So use a Child Theme!
That’s all you will need.
Oh, and a bit of html and php code.

The code is further down the article

You can either view the video below or follow the step by step instructions below.

Let’s get started with WordPress customize wp-admin login page logo using functions php.

First FTP into the WordPress installation and go to /wordpress/wp-content/themes/child-theme directory.
You want to create a directory inside the child-theme directory named “images” without the quotes where you will upload your new logo image file.

Filezilla create images directory

Next upload your logo image to this /wordpress/wp-content/themes/child-theme/images/ directory.
Write down or remember the new logo’s image dimensions and file name. You will need them when configuring the code in the function.php file.
Log out of your FTP session. We are done with that part.

Next login to the WordPress/wp-admin/ page with administrator privileges. Notice the default WordPress logo on the wp-admin page.
You won’t see it again.

Go to Appearance | Editor

WordPress appearance editor

Make sure your Child Theme is selected to edit.
Then on the right side of the page select the Theme Functions | functions.php file to edit.
Scroll to the end of the functions.php file to add the code from below.

Add code to functions php file

Add this code to your functions.php file.
// Change admin login logo
function my_login_logo() { ?>
<style type="text/css">
#login h1 a, .login h1 a {
background-image: url(<?php echo get_stylesheet_directory_uri(); ?>/images/logo.jpg);
height:72px;
width:300px;
background-size: 300px 72px;
background-repeat: no-repeat;
padding-bottom: 30px;
}
</style>
<?php }
add_action( ‘login_enqueue_scripts’, ‘my_login_logo’ );

// Change admin login logo link
function my_login_logo_url() {
return home_url();
}
add_filter( ‘login_headerurl’, ‘my_login_logo_url’ );

// Change Title description
function my_login_logo_url_title() {
return ‘Title description on hover’;
}
add_filter( ‘login_headertitle’, ‘my_login_logo_url_title’ );
Next we need to edit the code for our own use.
We need to rename the logo image file to your logo’s image file name.
Edit image file name logo.jpg to your image file name.
<style type="text/css">
#login h1 a, .login h1 a {
background-image: url(<?php echo get_stylesheet_directory_uri(); ?>/images/logo.jpg);
Next edit the height, width, and background-size entries to the size of your image file.
height:72px;
width:300px;
background-size: 300px 72px;
Finally edit the
function my_login_logo_url_title() {
return ‘Title description on hover’;
Replace Title description on hover between the single quotes with your Title description.
Click Update file to save the changes.

Logout of WordPress.

You should now see the custom logo on the wp-admin login page.

Custom WordPress login logo

Windows 10 Mail Application Add Contact

How to using the Windows 10 Mail application add contact was a complete mystery to me.
Then I discovered the way!
The video below shows the exact steps to add a contact from a received email sender’s information.
Or how to add an email sender info to Windows 10 mail client.
The new Windows 10 mail client presents itself as a minimalist user interface.
Thing that don’t look clickable can be. They draw no attention to any function.
Oh, and one other thing. You don’t save Contacts in Contacts anymore.

You save Contacts in the People App

The thing is you don’t actually save the contact information in Windows 10 email.
You save contacts in the People App. There are actually three applications that are integrated in the Windows 10 Mail application.
They are Mail, Calendar, and People, applications.
Mail handles email, Calendar takes care of your scheduling or Calendar, and People is your Contacts application.

The Windows 10 Mail Application Add Contact video will show you how to add a contact to the People application of the sender of an email received by you.

HTTP to HTTPS SSL WordPress shared Linux 1and1 hosting

Adding SSL to your website has never been easier. The video below HTTP to HTTPS SSL WordPress shared Linux 1and1 hosting shows how to setup a SSL SNI certificate in a Linux shared hosting environment. I am using 1and1 hosting in this example but the principles will be similar regardless of hosting provider.
There are many FREE SSL choices available to website developers.
You can choose CloudFlare Flexible SSL for a FREE option, we have an article with video here on how to setup the FREE CloudFlare Flexible SSL for WordPress

We will do it for you

And at probably less than you imagine
Just give us a call!

The SSL option I am showing today in this article is provided by and managed by the hosting company and uses an SSL SNI certificate.
This type of SSL certificate is usually provided FREE of charge by the hosting provider. 1and1 hosting is providing this SSL service FREE of charge to it’s hosting customers and that just happens who is providing the website hosting in the video.

SSL SNI Certificate manage by hosting provider HTTP to HTTPS

Hosting providers are now offering a FREE SSL certificate to their hosting customers. This type of SSL certificate is usually of the SNI SSL type. SNI stands for (Server Name Indication). This is end to end encryption from browser to server. Using SNI SSL certificate gives the ability to provide SSL in shared hosting environments, such as shared linux website hosting. The SNI SSL uses only one IP address and has separate SSL certificates for each domain. An advantage of this type of SSL is hosting providers are able to save precious IP v4 addresses and still provide HTTPS services.

So check with your hosting provider to see if they offer this type of SSL for Linux shared hosting and do your part to help secure the internet.

Windows 10 VPN Server Client PPTP Setup

Covered in this Windows 10 VPN server client PPTP setup article and video.
Router port forwarding of TCP and UDP protocol port 1723.
Windows 10 VPN server configuration.
Setting up the Windows 10 VPN client.
Setting for windows 10 firewall inbound rules. Access shared folders and resources such as printers remotely and securely.
This article and video I will show Windows 10 VPN server client PPTP setup.
Including Windows 10 firewall settings needed for connecting to shared folders from remote locations or the public internet and not just your local area network or LAN.
This VPN configuration is not intended to hide or protect your location. It is intended to enable connectivity and some level of security when connecting to an local network resource from the internet or a WAN.

You will want to view the video and read the article if in the past after setting up a Windows 10 VPN and the VPN would connect but you receive error code 0x80070035 cannot find network path when attempting to view and or access shared folders or resources from outside your local area network such as the internet.
Network Troubleshooting report shows issue found: Windows can’t communicate with the device or resource. Make sure device or resource allows incoming connections for File and Printer Sharing.

I will start the Windows 10 VPN server client PPTP setup instructions by getting the IP address inforamtion that will be needed to complete the configurations. Then I will show setting up the router for port forwarding of TCP and UDP protocols on port 1723. Next I will show how to setup and configure the VPN server on a Windows 10 computer. This is the computer that has the shared resources you want to connect to. Resources such as files, folders, and printers. Next the setup of a shared folder on the computer adcting as the VPN server with the correct folder permissions. Then the Windows 10 firewall configuration for inbound rules for TCP and UDP port 1723 and the firewall settings that will allow you to access the shared folder or folders on the VPN server from outside your local area network like from the internet or a WAN. Then the Windows 10 PPTP VPN client configuration. This is setup on the Windows 10 computer that will used as the remote computer to connect to the VPN server either across a local area network or across the internet or WAN depending on which Windows firewall rule you implement.

This setup will differ depending on the make and model of your router. In my example I’m using a 2Wire 3600 HGV modem with built-in wireless router. The modem / wireless router was issued to me by AT&T U-Verse.
Setup static IP for VPN server PC. If possible. If this changes you have to use the new IP address assigned by the DHCP server when connecting to the shared resources on the VPN server.
Setup port forwarding TCP and UDP port 1723.
Find public IP of router. You can also get this information by typing this command ipconfig /all in the cmd window.
You will need this IP address when setting up the VPN client.

Create Windows 10 VPN server shared folder and assign folder permissions.

Windows 10 VPN New Shared Folder

You can create the shared folder at any location you want. For this example I will create it on the desktop of the Windows 10 VPN server.
To Create the shared folder on the desktop.
Right click on an open space of your desktop.
Hover over new then select folder.
Name folder. I will name mine vpn-share.
Right click on the newly created folder.
Apply.
OK.
Click Close.
You now have a shared folder with the correct permissions to use once you are connected to the VPN server using the PPTP VPN connection.
We are all most done with Windows 10 VPN Server Client PPTP Setup.
Now on to the Windows 10 firewall configuration.

Windows 10 firewall configuration.

Windows 10 VPN Firewall TCP UDP

Open Settings.
Then Network & Internet.
Select VPN.
Then under Related settings select Windows Firewall.
In the Windows firewall window Select Advanced settings.
Then select Inbound Rules.
Then right click on Inbound Rules and select New Rule.
Select Port then Next.
Select TCP and Specify local ports enter 1723 in the box then Next.
Allow the connection should be selected then click Next.
On the When does this rule apply Domain, Private, and Public should be checked. Then click Next.
Name the rule. I used 1723-tcp. Click Finish.

Now you need to create the Inbound Rule for UDP on port 1723. You do this the same way as you created the TCP port 1723 rule except select UDP and Specify local ports enter 1723 in the box then Next.
After you have finished setting up the TCP port 1723 and the UDP port 1723 Inbound Rule you are done with the configuration for using the VPN when both server and client are connected to the same local area network. You will be able to see and use your shared folders when both client and server are connected to the same LAN or local area network.

If you try to use the VPN from a remote location such as your local Starbucks Wi-Fi the VPN connection will connect but you probably won’t be able to see or use the shared folder on the VPN server you setup.

In order to have access to the shared folder on the VPN server through the VPN tunnel from a remote location you will need to change one firewall settings. I will cover the firewall setting changes to access shared resources through the VPN from the internet next.

Windows 10 Firewall settings enable access to shared folder from public internet or WAN

Windows 10 VPN Firewall File Printer Sharing

This is the fix for error code 0x80070035 when attempting to view and or access shared folders from outside your local area network.
Network Troubleshooting report shows issue found: Windows can’t communicate with the device or resource. Make sure device or resource allows incoming connections for File and Printer Sharing.
To begin.
Open Settings.
Then Network & Internet.
Select VPN.
Then under Related settings.
Select Windows Firewall.
In the Windows firewall window Select Advanced settings.
Then select Inbound Rules.
All the Inbound Rules should now be visible.
Scroll down the Inbound Rules until you find the File and Printer Sharing listings. When selecting the File and Printer Sharing rules make sure you are selecting the rule with the Profile of Private, Public and not Domain. Unless you want to include Domains.
Double Click on the Inbound Rule File and Printer Sharing (NB-SMB-In) with the Profile of Private, Public.
We need to change the Scope Properties Remote IP address, (These IP addresses, local subnet) change this setting to Remote IP address, (Any IP address).

To edit the Inbound File and Printer Sharing rule for File and Printer Sharing (NB-SMB-In) simply double click on the rule.
Then select the Scope tab.
In the Remote IP address section bullet These IP address,
then add,
then bullet Predefined set of computers,
then from the drop down menu select Internet
then OK
apply and OK.
Another way to allow SMB sharing from remote IP addresses is to bullet (Any IP address) in Remote IP address section.
Click Apply.
Then OK.
That’s it.

Setting up the Windows 10 VPN client.

Windows 10 VPN Client Setup

Open Settings.
Then Network & Internet.
Select VPN.
Select Add a VPN connection.
Under VPN provider select Windows (Built in).
Under Connection name the name of the connection.
Server name or address. Enter the public WAN IP address from the router.
Under VPN change to Point to Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP).
Type of sign-in info. Select User name and password.
Enter user name. This is the user name used when the setting up the server side of the VPN.
Enter password. This is the password used when the setting up the server side of the VPN.
Check Remember my sign-in info if you want to.
Click Save.
That’s it for the Windows 10 VPN Client setup.
You will now be able to make a VPN connection using PPTP (Point to Point Tunneling Protocol) from a client computer into the VPN server you created and access shared folders on that computer from the outside your local area network as an example from your local Starbucks or McDonld’s Wi-Fi network.

Windows 10 Disable OneDrive on Startup

Windows 10 has a built in cloud storage application called OneDrive.
This article will show you to using Windows 10 Disable OneDrive on Startup.
We will also show you how to remove the OneDrive icon from the navigation window of File Explorer.

With Windows 10 Home you will need to edit the Windows Registry file to accomplish this task.
This step requires editing Group Policies with Windows 10 Pro or Enterprise.

To stop the OneDrive Cloud Storage application from loading on startup

Every time you start Windows 10 you need to open Windows Task Manager.
You can open Task Manager by right clicking on the Windows 10 Task Bar.
Once Task Manager is open select the Startup Tab.
Then highlight the Microsoft OneDrive application and click on the Disable button.
You have now disabled Windows 10 One Drive on start up. It will no longer load when you start your computer.
This works for all editions of Windows 10.

The previous procedure stops OneDrive from loading on startup. But the One Drive icon is still on the window of File Explorer.
If you want to remove the One Drive icon from the Windows 10 File Explorer window follow the steps below.
For Windows 10 Home edition.
Using Registry Editor regedit, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\OneDrive. (If that key doesn’t exist, you need to create it). Add a new DWORD value, DisableFileSyncNGSC, and set it to 1. Restart the PC to make the policy setting effective.

In Windows 10 Pro or Enterprise, you can use Group Policy to make this change. Open Local Group Policy Editor (Gpedit.msc). Next go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > OneDrive. Double-click the policy Prevent The Usage Of OneDrive For File Storage and set it to Enabled.

After you restart your PC, the OneDrive icon is no longer in the navigation pane and the sync client no longer runs.

These changes apply to all users of the selected device. If you previously synced files to OneDrive, they remain in the local OneDrive folder but are no longer linked to the cloud folder.

Windows 10 Virtual Desktops Task View feature

Windows 10 has a feature called Windows 10 Virtual Desktops Task View that gives you the ability to create virtual desktops.

What are virtual desktops you ask?

Virtual desktops are desktops that you can propagate with different applications or windows.
This is especially helpful if you open a lot of programs at one time and have limited screen space. Or create desktops for different projects. There are many way virtual desktops can by organized and used.
Much like switching between open programs you can switch between complete desktop layouts with different applications.

How to add a virtual desktop

Open up the new Task View pane by clicking the Task View button it looks like a square on top of a rectangle located on the taskbar. You can also open the Task View using keyboard shortcuts by pressing the Windows Key + Tab. Now once inside the Task View pane, click New desktop to add a virtual desktop. You can also quickly add a virtual desktop without entering the Task View pane by using the keyboard shortcut Windows Key + Ctrl + D.

Switch between virtual desktops

To switch between virtual desktops open the Task View pane and click on the desktop you want to switch to. You can also quickly switch desktops without going into the Task View pane by using the keyboard shortcuts Windows Key + Ctrl + Left Arrow and Windows Key + Ctrl + Right Arrow.
Another way you can also switch between desktops using the keyboard shortcuts is by pressing the Windows key + Tab. The programs on the currently active desktop display as large thumbnails. The thumbnail for the currently active program on that desktop is outlined. Now, press Tab again. This removes the outline from the active program thumbnail and Task View interface active. Now use the arrow keys to move to the desktop you want in the Task View interface. When you have highlighted the desktop you want to switch to, press the Enter key.

Move a window from one desktop to another

To move a window or application from one desktop to another, you first open up the Task View pane and then hover over the desktop containing the window you want to move. The windows on that desktop will pop up; find the window you want to move, right-click it, and select Move to and choose the desktop you want to move the window to. You can also drag and drop windows or applications on to another desktop. Grab the window you want to move and drag it into the desktop you want it on.

Close a virtual desktop

To close a virtual desktop, open up the Task View pane and hover over the desktop you want to close until a small X appears in the upper right corner. Then click the X to close the desktop. You can also close desktops without going into the Task View pane by using the keyboard shortcut Windows Key + Ctrl + F4 this will close the current desktop.

Multi-Monitor Support

The Windows 10 Virtual Desktops Task View feature also works with multi-monitor configurations.
Well, there you have it the Windows 10 Virtual Desktops Task View feature explained.
